Earlier this year, MLegal proudly facilitated an inspiring visit to the UK Parliament for a group of young people, including our intern Shijing from Queen Mary University of London and work experience candidate Mathew. The visit provided participants with a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of how Parliament operates and to engage directly with staff working for senior political figures such as Rachel Reeves and Afzal Khan MP.
The day offered valuable insight into the journeys of those who have built careers within Parliament and the wider policymaking arena. Participants learned about the different pathways into political roles, the functions of the House of Commons and House of Lords, and the importance of legal and policy expertise in shaping national debates.
Reflecting on her time with MLegal and the Parliament visit, Shijing shared:
“I really enjoyed the variety of experiences across both MLegal and the Parliament day. At MLegal, it felt like an achievement to work on practical matters such as researching legal cases and statistics in response to the government’s call for evidence on reforming the Equality Act 2010. I also attended online events where different organisations discussed how best to allocate legal resources to address discrimination, which stretched me to think critically about how structural inequality can be improved. The Parliament day complemented this by showing me the processes behind policymaking in action. The tour and networking with people working in the House of Commons and Lords gave me a deeper understanding of the different balances of power involved in shaping and refining policy. Together, both experiences gave me a rounded view of how law, advocacy, and politics interact.”
For many, the visit was a powerful source of motivation, offering a first-hand look at careers in public service. Work experience participant Mathew described the impact of the day:
“A great experience that gave amazing insights into how parliament functions. It has really inspired me to hold high aspirations and will be something I’ll always remember!”
Through initiatives like this, MLegal remains committed to creating pathways for young people to engage with legal, political, and policy spaces that shape civic life in Britain. By connecting emerging voices with practitioners and decision-makers, we aim to cultivate informed, confident, and socially conscious future leaders.
